One more tutorial before this year’s Halloween / Samhain / Día de los Muertos. This time, unlike the Halloween brain cake, it will be something rather for girls only. I will show you how to make a sewn felt witch hat to use as a decoration.
You will need:
- pair of compasses
- black felt sheet
- black thread
- ribbon to decorate – you can find many colorful ribbons here
First draw a smaller circle with your pair of compasses, then a larger circle. My small circle has 3 cm in diameter, the big circle has 10 cm in diameter. This is the stencil for the upper pointy part of the hat.
We also need a stencil for the lower flat part. The ratio I use is to draw a line that has the length of a bit more than one and half of the big circle’s diameter (here 16 cm). Then pin the compass in the center of that line, set the compass at half the length (8 cm) and draw a half-circle.
Cut both stencils out. Cut the small circle out of the big one to make a hole. Fold the second stencil (half-circle) in half and cut it. Pin both stencils to the felt.
Cut out both shapes from felt.
Take the half of the half-circle and fold it in half aligning the long sides. Stitch them together with a blanket stitch (or other firm stitch). Now you have an irregular cone which is wrong side out.
Turn it right side out.
Put the flat part on the standing cone and press it all the way down.
Use the fingers of one had to keep the edges of both parts aligned and stitch stem together again with the blanket stitch.
This is what a stitched hat looks like.
You can use the hat for example to create a headband fascinator. I have one for sale, you can have a look and purchase it here.
